My Summer Garden

Do you enjoy gardening? Do you like helping people with their gardening questions? Do you want to learn about planting trees? Growing a vegetable garden? Successfully growing turf? Recognizing and managing insects and diseases on your plants?

If so, then the Colorado State University Master Gardener Program in Douglas County may be the place for you! The Douglas County Master Gardener program is currently accepting applications for the 2012 class. Training will be on Tuesdays for 10 weeks beginning January 10th.

As a Colorado Master Gardener you will be trained by experts in the field and asked to return your knowledge to the community through volunteer outreach.

Xeriscape Garden Contest sponsored by Parker Water and Sanitation

blue flax xeriscape plant colorado.The Parker Water and Sanitation District is sponsoring their annual Xeriscape Garden Contest in Parker. If you are using water wise gardening concepts in your yard, you can win prizes and bragging rights this summer.  Mail, drop-off or e-mail a color photo of your Xeriscaped yard to 19801 E. Mainstreet, Parker, CO 80134 or email cmiller@pwsd.org by June 25, 2010.

Judges will consider:

  • water use
  • attractiveness
  • upkeep
  • creative use of Xeriscape plants
  • creative use of Xeriscape techniques.

Parker residents are asked to do your part and conserve water by following the water schedule and no watering on Friday’s.

If you address end with an odd number your watering days are Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday, even numbered addresses water on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.  Multi Family, HOA and commercial properties are asked to water Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.

Please stop by the district office and pick up your free packed of xeric Zinnia seeds, water conserving showerheads, faucet aerators and shower timers.

11 AM – 1PM, Cooking and Tasting Demonstrations
Herb Gourmet, Deb Whittaker  C.H.E.F. (Cheap, Healthy, Easy, Fresh and Delicious). Deb shows us her talents with pumpkins and winter squash. Come pick up some recipes and ask your questions on how to serve these yummy veggies.

This event in Monument was the closest Pumpkin patch I can find and it’s only 25 minutes South of us on I-25.

2009: We’ll be open from Sept. 25th to Oct. 31st, Fridays and Saturdays 9-5 PM

Open in October on Wednesdays and Thursdays 9-12 AM

2:30-3:30 PM Sustainable Gardening: 15 Tips to Get You Started
Carole Kastler of Camelot Design.  Carole shows how to make your landscape more sustainable—it’s easy! First, and most importantly, Place the right plant in the right place. Then “Mother” your plants, continue to work the soil (amendments), and just relax when it comes to any bugs you may come across.
